I just erased my last post
10/27/2005 06:47:00 PM

... because it was way to negative. It comes down to this: I didn't have such a good day. Nothing valuable came out of it. I felt lost during a lecture on Shakespeare's Richard III, disapointed in journalisme, and completely stressed out on the bus.

There I was, in my uncomfortable seat in journalisme ecrit, when I asked myself what I was still doing in school. Two years in kindergarden, 6 years in elementary school, 2 years of junior high, 5 years of high school (because we used to have grade 13), 3 years of university... I'm in my 19th year of studying. What am I still doing in this stressful environment? Of course, my career will propably be as stressful, but at least it will be a different kind of stress. I'm tired of being worried about grades, readings, lectures, papers, researches and essays. Sure I don't have to worry about grades, I'm way above what's required to enter in the Faculte d'education. But it will impact my salary when I become a teacher. Nonetheless, it's not a reason to stress right now, my grades aren't falling drastically. Actually, I don't even know if my grades have dropped. So why stress? I'm like Hermione Granger in that sense.

What bothers me the most is how out of place I feel sometimes in my classes. I'm not as good as I would like to be in english, and my french isn't up to the standards I would want it to be. Of course my french grammar would be even better if I didn't attend english literature classes. But my english wouldn't be this good either. I chose both, there are consequences. But I'll come out a winner. I just wish some people realized how valuable it is to be bilingual. Ironically, it's the french people (usually from accross the border) who like to point out that I have an english accent. Ce n'est pas un accent, c'est la facon dont parlent les franco-ontariens!

I'm taking an audience research class, for which I have to organize a research study. It's actually demanding but fun. However, I'm finding it hard to find somewhere to distribute surveys. Why has everything become private property all of a sudden? This is adding to my stress load.

I want to escape all this stress. Because when I look at it from the outside, it seems so pointless to worry. But sometimes I can't help it. Today was one of those days.

On a lighter note
There are four songs on the Harry Potter Soundtrack website. I really like "This is the Night". The rock & roll feel brings even more realism to the story. Suddenly, their world doesn't seem so far away.

Jazzy, Rachel and Kass, thanks for the comments and the nice words about by wallpaper.

Another piece of art that I can add to my collection. This one can be found in Walls, a sub category of Collection. It can be used for personal use only. Credit for the photo goes to The Leaky Cauldron. According to MuggleNet, there are only 24 days 9 hours 54 minutes before the release of the film Harry Potter & the Goblet of Fire. I can't wait.

Thanks Jac for the comment.

Le doux parfum du vide
10/21/2005 11:01:00 PM

Would you like to feast on human flesh? This theatrical production revolves around a restaurant, "Le Pleonasme" that serves, yes you heard it right, human flesh. I had to see this play for my "Journalisme culturel" class. We had a choice between 2. This wasn't my first choice, but notheless the one I saw. When I heard the synopsis, I thought it was interesting, but very weird. My opinion changed when I got there. The theater was really cozy. You feel as if you are IN the play. I was served a glass of water by the same man who sold the tickets, and who happens to be the theater director. It was my first visit, and I'm definitely going back.

Now on to the play. Amazing. Weird, I have to admit, but very well done. The actors were really good and funny, and the play was very well produced. Under this bizarre story lies a deep meaning. I won't state it obviously, by fear of being sensored by firewalls... but it deals with what starts with an "s", ends with and "x" and has an "e" in the middle. How people use it to feel alive, even though they don't. How it becomes meaningless. How it can be seperate from love. That's the message that's being told underneath a story of, lets face it, canibalism. But it's very well done... don't think Annibal Lector people. Not at all like that. It shows the detachment between the act, and love, and the body.

My Week...
... was hectic. Very busy. Crazy. But it wasn't horrible. The work I was doing was interesting (and very close to fun). My favourite part was interviewing an art director in a cultural center (who also happens to be a comedian). To copy down the entire interview afterwards (3hrs) and choose, amongst the 9 pages, which 1 1/2 I should include in my paper was the not-so-good part. Everything took around 8 hours overall. I know, that's a lot. But things have cooled down, for a couple of days at least. I'll be able to have a weekend this time!

Thanks Jac and Kass for the comments. And Kass, check the comments in the previous post, I answered to your issue with pop-ups.

Elizabethtown
10/16/2005 10:48:00 AM

I laughed, I cried and I felt nervous. Only truly amazing movies manage to make me feel the characters' emotions. Elizabethtown did. I saw the movie on openning night. Orlando Bloom and Kirsten Dunst had a good chemistry on screen. The music, chosen by writer/director Cameron Crowe brings such a good vibe to the film. It's dark at times, especially at the beginning, but he managed to present it in a "lighter" way. The story is filled with life messages. Strong messages. And there were so many good quotations that I wish I had brought a pen and paper to write some of them down. I did extra effort to remember one that I found very meaningful. It's said by Claire, Kirsten Dunst's character.

"I'm impossible to forget, but I'm hard to remember."

I might try and catch the movie in theaters a second time. I'm definitely buying it when it comes out. Other than the amazing movie experience (the theater was packed by the way), I'm spending my weekend working and doing research for a class project. This is a crazy time of year in University. Papers are due, there's a ton of reading to do, and you have to write midterms. My two journalism classes are especially demanding. I'm giving my second interview this week. I'll get through it. :)

Thanks Jac and Kass for the comments and feedback about my quote. Have a nice week everyone.

It says "Comment 0", until I publish a new entry. Why is that? Maybe I should have clicked on the "Comment 0"... maybe the comments were there even though it said "0". Nonetheless, I received and read the messages of Jac and Kass. Thanks girls for the support.

Duality of language is a tough situation depending on the region where you live. Although les francophones represent 30% of my city's population, learning English is inevitable. You have to know it to make your way around. I used to be so scared of English classes. I blame it all on my 3rd grade teacher (the year I started learning it) who once screamed at me in front of the whole class because I couldn't form a proper sentence. Horrible. I got over it though, and really enjoyed my English classes in High School. I particularly enjoy English literature. Jane Austen is one of my favourite authors (I adore the novel Emma).

What I don't like about the language is it's importance in today's world. Franco-ontariens (francophones who live in Ontario) are attracted to a language that seems "cooler" (when you're a child) and more popular... and are letting their French slide. I find this very disapointing. Very. Although I address myself in English on the web, I speak French at home, with my friends (except for one), at work and in most of my classes. I don't want to be promoting a language that may be causing the downfall of my own (ok I may be exagerating a little). But yesterday I saw it from a new perspective: I can teach those children that being bilingual is a great advantage. Why choose? Why not use both? The thing is to know when to use each language. Because you don't want one to overpower (is that a word?) the other.

Enough on that, I want to move on to a new subject (wow, I do have a lot to say today). Elizabethtown is coming out in 3 days. Yes, I'm counting down the days. :) I'm seeing it with one of my best friends from High School. We don't see each other as much anymore (University, work, boyfriends), so it will be really fun to have a movie night, just like in the old days. Speaking of friends from the past, I got into contact with a guy I met 2 1/2 years ago (by email). I haven't seen him in a while (over a year). I was discussing the subject (aka. him) with a friend last night. I ran into him today. What a coincidence!

"While I crave new experiences, I often try to avoid them."

This very quotation can be found in the section "Elise". It's not from anyone famous. It actually comes from me. I mentionned a variation of it (Although I crave change, I usually try to avoid it) to a friend of mine yesterday, and she loved it. We joked around about how I should write a book. I laughed and suggested a title: How to over-analyze your life to a point where you don't know who you are and what you want. The publishers would have to use a small font; that's a long title. lol! Let me know which variation of the quote you prefer... of if you don't like it at all. I'm very open to feedback on the subject.

Good night everyone.

Stressing about future plans.

Now that I've figured out what I want to do with my life, I have found other little things to stress about. Well, some of them are important things, which shouldn't really be considered "little". I am in the process of applying to "La Faculté d'éducation" aka. Teacher Education Program. I've been looking foward to (and preparing for) this next step for a year. However, the process is complicated, and the instructions are sometimes a little blurry. I'm also still torn between two languages. I am a francophone at heart and proud to be. I am also attracted to the english language and its literature. I am set on teaching in Junior High; english would be my main subject. But I'm having second thoughts. Or maybe not. I just love both languages and their literatures. I don't want to choose, but in this case, I technically have to. This duality of language is not easy to live with. I sometimes feel like my computer keyboard: switching back and forth between EN and FR, with the help of the ALT and SHIFT keys.

I hope everyone had a nice weekend. I spent mine celebrating "l'Action de grace" (Thanksgiving) and the other half doing research, and getting ready for my teaching career. Thanks Jazzy, Kass and Carmen for the comments.

Thanks Rachel for the comment. Wow, I can't believe I posted 3 times in 24 hours. This is what happens when it rains all day. No motivation.

New day, new perspective
10/07/2005 02:56:00 PM

I made some changes to the layout. A good night's sleep (ya right!) gave me some perspective on the choice of colours. I'm not sure if the small scribbles are starting to become part of a new style I have, but I've been including them in random art here and there. I find them interesting, I'm waiting for feedback. :) I actually only slept 5 hours, which isn't close to being enough for me. I managed to stay awake (and pay attention) during my 3-hour morning class though. I'm good.

Old journal archives (03-05) were added to the website. Thanks Kass for the comment.

To all who wander:

Not all who wander are aimless.
Especially those who seek truth
Beyond tradition,
Beyond definition,
Beyond image.

- Mona Lisa Smile

Here is a new layout, inspired by Orlando Bloom and Kirsten Dunst in Elizabethtown. The quote on the banner comes from Mona Lisa Smile. I found it very appropriate at the moment. The old archive will be back soon. I had to start an entirely new blog to include the comments feature, with Blogger. Everything should be in order. But considering the time it is right now (I should so be in bed!), I might have overlooked some things. Let me know if anything isn't working.

Thanks to everyone who emailed me lately.
